The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has urged Nigerians to refrain from interpreting judicial matters through a political lens.
Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Thursday after the presentation of the book Tribulations and Trophies: Bola Ajibola, in His Own Words!, Fagbemi emphasized the importance of objectivity and legal clarity in such matters.
According to Daily Post, Fagbemi’s comments came in response to the ongoing emergency rule in Rivers State, which has been a point of contention.
While he refrained from taking sides, he stressed that the matter was under judicial review, urging the public to avoid emotional or partisan interpretations of the situation.
The AGF called on Nigerians to thoroughly understand legal principles before forming opinions, emphasizing that the law must be followed without the influence of political sentiment.
“It’s not a matter of emotion or sentiment; it’s about the facts and what the law says,” Fagbemi stated.
Since President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, the political crisis in the state has escalated.
The declaration included the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State Assembly for six months.
Additionally, the President appointed retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s sole administrator.
Fagbemi reiterated that while he is part of the government, he had deliberately avoided taking a stance on the issue, emphasizing the need to let the courts resolve the matter.
He urged stakeholders to refrain from allowing partisanship to cloud their judgment during legal proceedings.
