Former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, has called for the immediate release of all individuals arrested during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow peaceful protest in Abuja on Monday.
Among those detained were Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Chief Aloy Ejimakor.
According to Vanguard, Wabara condemned the excessive use of force by security operatives, including the firing of teargas and the reported assault on a journalist whose equipment was damaged.
He described the crackdown on peaceful protesters as a serious embarrassment to Nigeria’s international image and urged President Bola Tinubu to rein in the security agencies.
Emphasizing the constitutional right to peaceful protest, Wabara argued that law enforcement should protect demonstrators, not attack them.
Drawing a comparison to the ongoing ‘No King Protest’ in the U.S., he noted there had been no similar incidents of brutality there and challenged Nigerian security forces to adopt a more democratic approach.
Wabara accused the APC-led government of using repression to silence opposition, despite having come to power through protests in 2015.
He warned that such actions are undemocratic and risk plunging the country into dictatorship.
The elder statesman urged President Tinubu to consider releasing Nnamdi Kanu as a political solution to ongoing unrest in the South East.
He argued that if the government can pardon convicted criminals and negotiate with terrorists, releasing Kanu should not be out of reach.
Wabara praised the peaceful conduct of the protesters and the courage of activists like Omoyele Sowore.
He called on Nigerians to unite against injustice and uphold the rule of law for the sake of national unity and fairness. See, More, Here>>>
