According to report by Vanguard on Sunday, August 31, 2025, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially declared the results of Saturday’s Local Government Area (LGA) chairmanship elections, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerging as the dominant winner.

According to the announcement made by RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, on Sunday in Port Harcourt, the APC clinched victory in 20 of the 23 LGAs, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with control of only three.

The PDP retained its stronghold in Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City (PHALGA), and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA). However, the outcome was particularly striking as Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s home LGA, Opobo-Nkoro, fell to the APC, signaling a major political upset.

The detailed results released by RSIEC showed a sweeping victory for the APC across most LGAs. In areas such as Khana, Oyigbo, Etche, Emohua, and Andoni, the party recorded very high vote margins, with Khana delivering 156,027 votes for APC candidate Bariere Thomas, and Andoni producing 126,181 votes for Lucky Promise.

Other notable APC victories included Emohua with 114,380 votes for Chidi Lloyd, Etche with 100,649 votes for Njoku Boniface, and Oyigbo with 101,495 votes for Okechukwu Akara.

The PDP, meanwhile, consolidated its position in Obio-Akpor where its candidate, Gift Worlu, garnered an impressive 328,823 votes, the highest single tally in the election. In Port Harcourt City (PHALGA), PDP’s Allwell Ihunda secured 235,054 votes, while in ONELGA, Shedrack Ogbogu emerged with 51,051 votes.

Other LGAs such as Bonny, Ogu-Bolo, Okrika, Degema, Akuku-Toru, and Ikwerre also went to the APC, reflecting the party’s widespread acceptance in different parts of the state.

Notably, in Opobo-Nkoro Governor Fubara’s base, APC’s Jame A. Jame won with 38,822 votes, further underlining the scale of the party’s dominance.
