Peter Obi, former Anambra Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has responded to the recent admission by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) regarding technical errors that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

At a press briefing in Abuja, JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede broke down in tears while apologizing to candidates and their parents, describing the incident as a systemic failure that turned what should have been a moment of joy into a distressing experience for many young Nigerians.

JAMB has scheduled retakes for affected candidates to be held over three days at designated centres, with rescheduling for those with timetable clashes to ensure fairness.

Peter Obi took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to comment on the situation, stating: “His open admission of fault and the expression of deep remorse stand out as a rare but commendable display of accountability in our public institutions. But it raises a very concerning issue on glitches and the grave havoc it’s creating in our country, even in critical institutions like JAMB.”

He emphasized the emotional and psychological toll on students and parents, noting reports of severe trauma and even death linked to the fallout from the errors.

Obi called for comprehensive reforms, urging JAMB and similar institutions to adopt rigorous quality assurance frameworks, including constant auditing of technical infrastructure and transparent communication with stakeholders to restore public confidence.

Obi warned that “there must be no room for further glitches – not in JAMB, not in any arm of government. The cost of repeated failure is simply too high.”

His statement highlights the urgent need for systemic improvements to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s examination processes and protect the future of its youth.
