According to a report by Vanguard on Thursday, November 6, 2025, human rights lawyer, Liborous Oshoma, has linked the recent controversy over U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to invade Nigeria to a recurring pattern in the country’s political history.
He recalled that in 2014, opposition politicians, including now-President Bola Tinubu, used similar claims of “Christian genocide” to discredit the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Oshoma noted that the same narrative which once served as a political weapon against Jonathan’s administration has now resurfaced, this time directed at Tinubu’s government.
He explained that such tactics often backfire, as political strategies built on foreign sympathy can easily be turned against those who once used them. View, More,

According to him, the situation highlights a long-standing culture of political hypocrisy in Nigeria, where leaders exploit international narratives for short-term gain.
In 2014, the opposition’s portrayal of Nigeria as unsafe for Christians helped build foreign pressure against Jonathan’s government.
A decade later, that same story is being repeated, but now used to question Tinubu’s handling of insecurity.
Oshoma stressed that this repetition shows the danger of politicising human rights issues and inviting foreign interference.
He argued that when politicians seek external validation rather than internal reform, they weaken the country’s credibility on the world stage.
What was once a political tool for opposition now stands as a global indictment against those in power.
“When Tinubu and co went to America using the genocide narrative to oust Jonathan, they didn’t know the same strategy would be used against them someday,” he noted. View, More,
