Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, stated that there are only two circumstances that could prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from being re-elected in 2027.
According to The Nigerian Tribune, it was reported that during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Sheriff remarked that Tinubu’s return to office was virtually assured unless the presidential election did not take place or the president himself decided not to run.
He expressed strong confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and maintained that, if he contests, his re-election would amount to a walkover victory.
“I can tell you for free, the only two things that will stop President Tinubu from winning the election in 2027 are only two factors: one, if there are no elections in Nigeria; two, if he decides not to run,” he said.
Senator Ali Modu Sheriff also addressed the issue of national security, with particular focus on the Boko Haram insurgency affecting the northern region of the country. He stated that achieving a permanent defeat of the terrorist group would require Nigeria to strengthen its diplomatic and security relationships with neighbouring countries.
He stressed the importance of regional cooperation in combating the insurgency, noting that Nigeria must establish proper ties with Cameroon, Chad, and Niger in order to effectively disrupt Boko Haram’s cross-border activities.
Sheriff further reflected on his role in the political rise of Vice President Kashim Shettima, disclosing that he was the one who introduced Shettima to politics. He explained that before venturing into public service, Shettima had been working as a banker.
