Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, has visited the family of two teenage boys who lost their lives during last week’s flood disaster in Edolo, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The condolence visit, captured in a video shared by Echo 360 TV from 3:06, showed the Speaker consoling the grieving mother and expressing sympathy over the tragic incident.
Amaewhule described the deaths as a heartbreaking loss that highlights the urgency of tackling the recurring flooding challenge across the state.
He said the tragic event was not only a personal loss to the affected family but also a call to action for authorities to address the root causes of such preventable disasters.
According to reports, the two victims, aged 16 and 17, were siblings. They drowned after one of them attempted to rescue the other, who had slipped into the floodwaters while trying to retrieve his slippers. The incident occurred as torrential rainfall caused widespread flooding in several parts of the community.
During the visit, the boys’ mother tearfully narrated the ordeal, explaining that her family had lost everything to the flood and was struggling to find shelter. She expressed deep pain over the deaths of her sons, whom she described as her only hope for the future.
In response, the Speaker announced a donation of ₦2 million to support the bereaved family as they begin to rebuild their lives.
He said the contribution was made on behalf of his family and the people of Obio-Akpor, noting that it was meant to offer relief during their time of mourning.
Amaewhule stated, “On behalf of my family and the good people of Obio-Akpor, we will give the sum of two million naira.”
He stressed that although no financial gesture could replace the lives lost, the act symbolized compassion and solidarity with the grieving family.
He also called on the Rivers State Government to take immediate and decisive action to mitigate the impact of flooding in vulnerable communities.
According to him, the state must prioritize the clearing of blocked drainages and canals to prevent similar tragedies in the future. See, More, Here>>>
