In a recent interview on Symfoni TV from 34:44, veteran actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed creation of Anioma State, making it clear that such a move would not be legally permissible under Nigeria’s constitution.

“Anioma is not qualified by law to be created from the Southeast,” Okonkwo stated, emphasizing that the process of state creation in Nigeria is guided by constitutional provisions, not by ethnic or cultural affiliations. He explained that Anioma, being part of Delta State in the South-South geopolitical zone, cannot legally be transferred into the Southeast region without constitutional amendments and approval from the National Assembly.

Okonkwo acknowledged that the Anioma people share cultural and linguistic similarities with the Igbo-speaking communities of the Southeast, but he maintained that such historical and ethnic ties do not override the constitutional framework that defines Nigeria’s political boundaries. He said that while the desire for regional inclusion is understandable, it must be pursued through legitimate legal channels.

He further noted that the agitation for Anioma’s inclusion in the Southeast reflects a broader national sentiment for restructuring and regional balance. However, he warned that any action taken outside the law could destabilize the federation and create unnecessary political tension.

Okonkwo urged proponents of the Anioma cause to engage lawmakers, constitutional experts, and regional stakeholders in proper dialogue rather than resorting to emotional appeals. He stressed that true justice and fairness can only be achieved when all constitutional requirements are respected.
