Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has criticized the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over her recent remarks on Nigeria’s economic situation, reacting angrily to her comments.

Speaking in an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Saturday, August 16, 2025, George accused Okonjo-Iweala of being disconnected from the realities of Nigerians due to her residence abroad.

He said: “She lives in New York. Let her come and live and find out the state of affairs here. It’s not the picture she’s seeing.”

When asked whether Okonjo-Iweala might have been making a political statement or was simply misinformed, George dismissed her completely: “I don’t even care whatever she’s doing. You see, economists, they are social scientists. They are not physical scientists like us. On one hand, it will be this. On another hand, it will be this. It’s not an exact science. Whatever she’s talking about Nigeria, no, no, no.”

He went further to challenge the WTO DG to experience the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians: “Let her come here and get the feeling of the people. Let her go to her village and see the hunger and the anger on their faces. There is plenty of anger in Nigeria today. Where she got her story from and all that, let her remain there. Mrs. World Trade Organization, let her keep it out.”

Chief George stressed that what Nigerians demand is leadership that prioritizes fairness and good governance: “What we want in Nigeria is a fair government, good governance that would use the resources of, you know, this country is so blessed. There is no village you go in this country that you will not find one resource or the other.”
