According to something that was reported by PUNCH, the House of Representatives is currently deliberating over a bill that would amend the Constitution of 1999 in order to regulate the suspension of federal lawmakers.

A lawmaker from Bauchi State named Mansur Soro is the one who is sponsoring this bill, which has the intention of preventing the misuse of suspension rules within the National Assembly.

As part of his argument that the rules of the Senate should not be allowed to supersede the Constitution, Soro has proposed an amendment to Section 60 of the Constitution. This amendment would include the introduction of a new clause that would require a suspension to be approved by a majority of lawmakers equal to or greater than two-thirds.

He stated that the bill would protect elected representatives from being unfairly suspended and would guarantee that every constituency would continue to be represented in the legislature.

During his remarks regarding the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Soro urged the Senate to comply with the court order and reinstate her.

He was adamant that the people of Kogi Central should not be denied the opportunity to have their voices heard in the Senate because of political conflicts.

Additionally, Soro advocated for changes to be made in the process of selecting the members of the Ethics and Privileges Committee.

It is difficult for committee members to act independently against those who appoint them, according to his argument, who stated that the current system makes this difficult.

The House Committee on Constitution Review is currently contemplating the bill as part of their review process.

If it were to be passed, it would alter the process by which lawmakers are suspended, therefore ensuring that due process is adhered to.

“In order to comply with the court’s decision, the Senate ought to recall Senator Natasha and give the court the authority to make a decision. For the fight that occurred between two senators, the people of the Kogi Central Senatorial District should not be punished because of it. Their voice and representation in the Senate chamber ought to be brought back into the mainstream,” He stated.
