Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to seek a second term in office in 2027, arguing that the northern region of Nigeria urgently requires a leader focused on solving its growing issues, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed pointed out that insecurity and poverty continue to worsen in the North. He lamented that the region is mainly remembered during elections and largely ignored once voting is over.
He urged President Tinubu to dedicate the rest of his time in office to resolving these problems. According to Baba-Ahmed, the North and Nigeria as a whole deserve a president who is committed to addressing the people’s needs.
He advised Tinubu to consider backing a younger candidate in the next election — someone capable of understanding and responding to the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. He described such a move as a forward-thinking decision that could shift Nigeria’s political culture.
Baba-Ahmed stressed that the country needs younger, more dynamic leadership. Recycling the same leaders, he said, only prolongs citizens’ hardship.
The former Arewa Consultative Forum spokesperson and former adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima said it is time for President Tinubu to allow younger Nigerians to take charge.
He believes Tinubu can secure a positive legacy by using his remaining time in power to support leadership that truly prioritizes national development.
“The Arewa Consultative Forum wants Tinubu to address Northern challenges. Poverty and insecurity are worsening, and the region is being reduced to just a voting machine. All regions are suffering, but the North faces the harshest realities.”
“We need a leader who will govern in the interest of the North and the rest of Nigeria.”
“Leave the stage, not for your rivals, but to empower a new generation of Nigerians who can bring energy and fresh ideas,” he concluded.
