The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly rejected calls for clemency or pardon regarding his detention. According to NIGERIAN TRIBUNE reports, Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor said, Kanu believes he hasn’t committed any crime and therefore shouldn’t be subjected to appeals for pardon or clemency.

Ejimakor, in a statement released on Saturday, emphasized that Kanu appreciates the support of well-meaning individuals and groups calling for his release. However, he is displeased with those framing their appeals as a request for clemency or pardon, as this implies he has committed a crime. Kanu maintains that his detention has been declared unconstitutional by a Federal High Court, and he should be freed in accordance with the law.

Kanu also referenced international tribunal rulings that deemed his detention unlawful. He stated that his prosecution is baseless since self-determination is a right recognized by Nigerian law, the United Nations, the United Kingdom, and Kenya.

“Instead of pleading for mercy, those advocating for my release should insist on compliance with the rule of law,” Kanu stated through his legal team. He warned that calls for pardon could be misinterpreted as justification for continued legal actions against him, despite clear judicial rulings.

The IPOB leader argued that the Nigerian government should instead acknowledge its wrongdoing in his case, particularly his extraordinary rendition, which is considered a violation of international law.

Kanu urged those advocating for his freedom to adopt the approach used by groups like Afenifere, Ohaneze, and the World Igbo Congress, who have emphasized that his release is a legal necessity. He also encouraged focus on ensuring fairness and impartiality in the judicial process rather than appealing for clemency. He expressed gratitude to those working to restore peace and security in the South-East region.
