In a recent statement via his official X account, Dele Farotimi, a well-known human rights lawyer, author, and former spokesman for the Obi/Datti Presidential campaign in the South-West, has criticized the Senate’s approval of Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration and the suspension of democratically elected Governor Fubara.
This comes amid the ongoing fight between Fubara and Wike, who has the backing of Tinubu despite general condemnation of the suspension.
“There’s no opposition in the National Assembly, rather like there’s no National Assembly in reality. What we have is a collection of myopic morons without any clue as to the actual purpose of their existence,” Farotimi wrote.
The crisis in Rivers State has deepened in recent months, Fubara and Wike, his predecessor and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have been at odds over political control of the state.
Their fight has divided the state assembly into factions, with lawmakers loyal to Wike pushing for Fubara’s removal.
Despite widespread criticism, the Senate approved Tinubu’s decision to suspend Fubara, many Nigerians see this as an attack on democracy.
Civil society groups and opposition leaders have also condemned the move, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent.
Farotimi’s statement has added to the growing criticism of the Senate’s actions, believing the lawmakers have failed to uphold their duty as an independent body.
