According to the Cable, Justice Omotosho delivered a stern rebuke to Nnamdi Kanu during Thursday’s sentencing proceedings, declaring that the IPOB leader had consistently failed to grasp the true scale of the chaos, fear, and instability his actions unleashed across the South-East. According to the judge, Kanu’s conduct demonstrated a profound disconnect between his rhetoric and the devastating consequences borne by the very people he claimed to champion.

In a lengthy statement before pronouncing the court’s final decisions, Justice Omotosho stressed that the agitation led by Kanu went far beyond political advocacy, evolving into a violent campaign that resulted in deaths, destruction of public infrastructure, widespread economic paralysis, and emotional trauma for thousands of families. The judge noted that communities across the region suffered immense losses due to sit-at-home orders, attacks on security personnel, targeted killings, and intimidation linked to groups allegedly acting under IPOB’s banner.

Omotosho lamented that throughout the trial, Kanu never showed genuine introspection or acknowledgement of these consequences. Instead, he said, Kanu maintained an attitude the court interpreted as defiance rather than reflection. “He did not realize the magnitude of his crime and the effect of what he has done against his people,” the judge stated, emphasizing that leadership carries responsibility—especially when one’s influence directly affects public order and safety.

Omotosho concluded that Kanu’s failure to demonstrate remorse or understanding of these impacts weighed heavily in the court’s evaluation of his conduct and the appropriate sanctions. He reiterated that a leader must recognize when their actions cause harm, regardless of ideology or intention. The judge added that true advocacy for a people cannot involve subjecting them to fear, bloodshed, and instability. View, More,
