The political rift between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili has taken a dramatic turn, with Chief David Briggs, a former Commissioner in Rivers State, issuing a stern warning to Wike. Briggs criticized Wike for disrespecting Odili and stoking political tensions in Rivers State, accusing him of thriving on crisis and undermining peace, as reported by Punch.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Briggs described Wike’s claim that he “revived” Odili politically as a direct insult to the former governor and the people of Rivers. The feud stems from Wike’s fallout with his former ally, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whom Odili has backed against Wike in the state’s political power tussle.
“I served under Dr. Peter Odili as Commissioner for Works and Water Resources. He has been and remains a father figure. It is shocking that Wike, who was not even our contemporary, is now insulting Odili,” Briggs said. “He claims to have resurrected Odili, but that is not just an insult to Odili but to the entire Rivers people.”
Briggs accused Wike of deliberately stirring conflict to maintain relevance, pointing to a recent court ruling on federal allocations as evidence of the minister’s preference for turmoil over peace. “Wike cannot survive in a peaceful environment. He has caused enough harm in Rivers State and will continue to create problems,” Briggs alleged.
Highlighting Odili’s contributions to Rivers State’s political landscape, Briggs referenced Odili’s support for Dame Patience Jonathan during her confirmation process, asking, “If Odili was dead politically, would Patience Jonathan have taken Wike to his house for that confirmation?”
Briggs expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu’s silence on the matter, accusing the president of endorsing Wike’s divisive tactics. He called on Wike to issue a public apology, warning that failure to do so would lead to further revelations about Wike’s past, including allegations of betrayal and political manipulation.
“Wike must apologize to Rivers State, or we will reveal more about him,” Briggs asserted.
