During an interview with TVC News from 1.47, Segun Tomori commented on Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s claim that powerful ex-military generals are responsible for illegal mining in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria. According to Oshiomhole, these generals fund illegal activities by giving guns to local youths and transporting mined gold from the sites using helicopters.

Tomori explained that Oshiomhole’s statement is not new. He said that the Minister of Mines and Steel Development has previously mentioned in various meetings that influential Nigerians are involved in illegal mining. Tomori added that the level of banditry linked to mining in Zamfara and other areas is impossible without the backing of powerful individuals.

However, Tomori emphasized the progress the government is making in tackling the issue. He pointed out that President Tinubu’s administration is working hard to combat banditry. For example, Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, recently lost key allies and is now on the run.

He also mentioned that mining in Zamfara, which was previously banned due to security concerns, resumed in December 2024 because of the improved security situation. Tomori praised the coordination among Nigeria’s security forces, led by the National Security Adviser (NSA), which has been key in reducing banditry and illegal mining.

Tomori expressed confidence that legal mining activities would soon resume fully in Zamfara and other parts of northern Nigeria as the government continues to fight against bandits and those supporting illegal activities.
