Former Nigerian senator and social commentator, Shehu Sani, has called on the Federal Government to officially increase the allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, following widespread but false reports of a raise.
Sani made this appeal on his verified Twitter account, referencing the recent jubilation among NYSC members over a rumored increase in their monthly allowance to ₦70,000, which was later debunked as fake news.
In his tweet, Sani highlighted the disappointment felt by many youth corps members upon discovering that the news was untrue. He humorously suggested that the government should turn the “fake” news into a reality, emphasizing that this type of “fake” news would actually be beneficial if implemented.
“The Youth Corpers jubilated over the 70k increment only to be told it’s fake news. The FG should just turn the fake to real; this fake is a good fake,” Sani tweeted.
The senator’s statement comes at a time when the cost of living in Nigeria has been rising, making the current NYSC allowance insufficient for many members to meet their basic needs. The current monthly allowance for NYSC members is ₦33,000, a sum that many have argued is inadequate, especially given the economic challenges facing the country.
Sani’s call reflects the broader sentiment among young Nigerians, who have been advocating for a more substantial allowance to reflect the current economic realities. The suggestion to turn the “fake” increase into a real one could put pressure on the Federal Government to review and potentially raise the allowances for corps members….Seê – Morê
