In a recent video on Arise Tv from 1 minute 43 seconds, Political analyst Sam Amadi has revealed the significance of the Council of State, a vital institution in Nigeria’s governance framework. Established by General Yakubu Gowon in 1975 following the coup led by Murtala Mohammed, the Council was designed to stabilize the government during uncertain times. Over the years, it has evolved into an influential advisory body, composed of former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Chief Justices, and other senior officials.

Amadi emphasizes that the Council’s primary role is to provide strategic advice on national issues, including elections, security, and other critical concerns. The President is expected to consult this esteemed body on significant matters, utilizing the collective expertise and experience of its members to guide decision-making. The Council’s recommendations are particularly crucial when the government faces challenges to its legitimacy, as they can help broaden the administration’s support base and enhance its credibility.

However, Amadi also points out that the Council’s effectiveness depends on the government’s willingness to act on its advice. While engaging former Presidents and other high-ranking officials can strengthen the administration’s legitimacy, it is essential that these engagements are followed by tangible actions to address the grievances of the populace. Without concrete steps to implement the Council’s recommendations, the institution’s influence may be limited.

According to him, “First, this is an important institution. The Council of State was set up by Gowon in 1975 after the coup led by Murtala Mohammed. The council now functions as an advisory body made up of former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Chief Justices, and other high-ranking officials. It provides advice on national issues, including elections and membership concerns. The President is expected to seek their advice on critical matters. This institution plays a crucial role, especially when the government faces legitimacy crises. Engaging former Presidents broadens the administration’s legitimacy, though it must be backed by tangible results to address citizens’ grievances.”….Sêe __ Morê
