Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has raised alarming concerns about the state of opposition parties in Nigeria, while revealing private conversations with key political figures and calling for opposition unity.

In a revealing discourse on Symfoni TV from 2:57, El-Rufai reflected on the historical significance of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its current state of affairs. “Those that went to prison, those that were detained, all ended up in the PDP. Those were the real politicians that faced the military,” El-Rufai stated, highlighting the party’s historical importance. However, he noted a stark contrast with the present situation, adding, “But today, none of the founding fathers of the PDP can recognize it.”

The former governor expressed particular concern about the Labour Party’s situation, stating, “Labor Party, again, targeted for destruction. And it’s almost certain.” He then shared a revealing insight from a personal conversation with the party’s presidential candidate: “The last time I had a conversation with Peter Obi himself, he admitted to me that he doesn’t know what is happening in the party that he contested for president.”

El-Rufai suggested a systematic weakening of opposition parties, noting, “So there seems to be there seems to be a project to destroy all the opposition political parties.” In response to these challenges, he proposed a solution: “And the only option for the opposition, in my view, is to put aside their differences and come together and create a broad platform that will do the driving of the military again because we are there almost.”
