In a recent interview with TVC News from 2.31, legal expert Jide Ologun spoke about the defamation case between Afe Babalola, a respected lawyer, and Dele Farotimi, a public commentator. Farotimi was accused of making defamatory statements about Babalola, which led to a legal battle. Although Babalola has now withdrawn the charges, the case has sparked widespread discussion.

Ologun highlighted the challenges Farotimi faced, saying that the burden of proof lies on anyone making claims in court, as stated in Nigeria’s Evidence Act of 2011. He explained that Farotimi needed to provide evidence to back up his allegations but seemed unable to do so. “It may appear that Dele Farotimi may not be able to justify the allegations he has made,” Ologun said, noting that this has made the situation very tough for Farotimi, who even broke down in tears after being granted bail.

Babalola, known for his excellent reputation, was described by Ologun as someone who has worked hard to earn respect over the years. He emphasized that protecting one’s reputation is crucial, especially when accusations threaten to damage it.

Interestingly, traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife and other monarchs, stepped in to mediate. Their intervention led to Babalola withdrawing the charges, demonstrating the importance of reconciliation in resolving disputes.

Ologun also stressed that allegations must always be backed by solid evidence, especially when they involve someone’s reputation. Without proof, such claims can lead to serious consequences.
