A former Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has stated that the people of Edo State are the ones who have lost out by not electing Asue Ighodalo in the last governorship election.
During an interview with Trust TV from 24:44 , he emphasized that the PDP had presented an excellent candidate in Ighodalo, and since the electorate did not vote him into office, the loss was theirs.
Asue Ighodalo was defeated in the 2024 governorship election by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo. Following this, both the PDP and Ighodalo challenged the election outcome at the tribunal, filing a case against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC, and Governor Okpebholo.
Showunmi further stated that while the party had done its part by selecting a good candidate, it was not their responsibility to resort to extreme measures to counter electoral malpractice.
He said, “They produced a fantastic candidate in Asue Ighodalo in Edo. If Edo people did not do what they needed to do to make Asue their governor, it is their loss. We gave them a fantastic candidate. Are we supposed to at NWC go to the place and start shooting people, so that those who are criminally corrupting the process will stop?”
