Abubakar Yesufu, lawyer to former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, has dismissed rumors that Obaseki fled the country to avoid investigation. Speaking during an interview with Silverbird TV from 1.00, Yesufu explained that Obaseki traveled to the United Kingdom for a medical tour.

In the video that was shared by Silver Bird TV, Yesufu revealed that he met with Obaseki before his trip. “He invited me to his house and told me I should be the center point of his defense. He said he was going for a medical tour because, for the past eight years, he hadn’t had the chance to prioritize his health,” Yesufu said.

Obaseki, who served as Edo State governor for two terms, was previously head of the state’s economic team. According to Yesufu, the former governor’s commitment to his duties over the years left little time for personal health care. “The idea that he absconded is completely false,” the lawyer stressed.

When asked about the trend of ex-governors disappearing from public view after their tenures, often using medical trips as an excuse, Yesufu defended Obaseki’s actions. He stated that their conversation lasted more than two hours and covered many topics, including Obaseki’s reflections on his time in office.

“I asked him if he had any regrets after ruling Edo State for eight years. He said he didn’t, following the teachings of historical figures like Plutarch and Oscar Wilde. He said he doesn’t regret his past actions, even if some may criticize him,” Yesufu added.
