Mubarak Bala, a Nigerian freethinker and humanist who left his religion, expressed his surprise at being imprisoned for a facebook post, stating he did not anticipate such serious repercussions after his release.

In an interview with PUNCH, Bala stated that his outspoken views stem from leaving his religion, which he believes put his life in danger and led to calls for his death.

He noted that he never expected his comment would result in jail time. While he anticipated threats for criticizing religion, he thought he might face violence but not imprisonment by his own government for exercising his right to free speech.

Bala said,

“I never anticipated that my comment on Facebook would land me in prison, although if you are against the religion, you should expect threats. I expected, perhaps, to be killed, but I never expected that my government would send me to jail for exercising my right to free speech. Because I left a religion, they wanted me dead.”
