According to a report by Iran International English on X on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, a senior Iranian cleric, Ahmad Khatami, has lashed out at Turkey, accusing it of playing a significant role in the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s government in Syria.
Khatami, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts and Tehran Friday prayers leader, warned that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will face consequences for his actions.
Khatami’s scathing remarks came as the international community continues to grapple with the implications of Assad’s downfall.
The cleric’s comments also shows the complex web of alliances and rivalries in the region, with Iran, Turkey, and Israel all vying for influence.
According to Ahmad Khatami, Erdogan’s actions constitute a betrayal against Muslims, and he warned that the Turkish leader will eventually face the consequences of his actions.
In his own words, “Erdogan will pay the price for this betrayal against Muslims—one day, they [Muslims] will come for him.”
Senior Iranian cleric, Ahmad Khatami also took aim at Israel, describing its influence in the region as a shared threat to the entire Islamic world, not just Iran.
This sentiment is likely to resonate with many in the region, where Israel’s military presence and diplomatic influence are often viewed with suspicion.
