An Iranian lawmaker has declared that the country’s missile capabilities now extend to US cities from offshore positions, while also insisting that every European nation lies within Tehran’s reach.
According to Jerusalem Post, the remarks come as European powers move closer to reinstating United Nations sanctions against Iran.
Amir Hayat-Moqaddam, a member of Iran’s parliament and its National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, made the claims in an interview published Sunday by the Iranian outlet Didban Iran.
He said the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Aerospace Force has invested two decades in developing technology enabling missile launches from naval platforms.
“We can move our ships to within 2,000 kilometers of the US and from there target Washington, New York and other cities,” Hayat-Moqaddam asserted.
“Right now, all European countries are within our range.”
The MP’s comments appear timed against growing diplomatic pressure. Britain, France, and Germany recently indicated their readiness to trigger the so-called “snapback” mechanism that would reimpose UN sanctions on Tehran, citing concerns over its nuclear program and missile development.
Military experts, however, note limitations to Iran’s claim of being able to hit the US mainland from sea.
While Iran possesses a growing arsenal of cruise and ballistic missiles, including models with ranges up to 2,000 kilometers, its blue-water naval presence remains restricted.
Operating effectively at such distances would require significant basing, logistical, and survivability capabilities that Tehran is not yet believed to fully command.
Still, Iran has repeatedly showcased missile launches in drills near the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman, presenting them as evidence of deterrence against both regional rivals and Western powers.
The latest statement underscores Tehran’s effort to project strength amid mounting international isolation and the possibility of renewed global sanctions.
