Tony Nyiam is a retired Colonel from the Nigerian Army. He became known to the public on April 22, 1990, when he and some other army officers tried to change the military government led by General Ibrahim Babangida in a coup. He is also believed to have been a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee (PAC), which had an important role in organizing the National Conference in 2014.
During an interview with The Vanguard correspondent, Tony Nyiam was reported to have spoken on the issue of insecurity in the country, and suggested possible solutions to address the challenges facing the country.
Reacting to the claims that most of the suspects that have been arrested by security operatives in connection to the crime were foreigners, Nyiam said, “Well, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy to, disguisely, make the indigenous Nigerian communities’ land, his Fulani-clan kinsmen (from everywhere) new land acquisition, came close to the Sudanese tragedy.”
Nyiam mentioned that one of his former bosses, General Sani Abacha, who later became the Head of State of Nigeria, had warned that if an insurgency lasted more than 24 hours, it was an indication that the government was involved.
He pointed out that the challenges facing Nigeria’s security stem from the lack of transparency in governance and the mismanagement of the security system. Beyond these issues, he noted, there are also deeper underlying conditions that have emerged from other areas.
