In a recent statement via his official X account, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, a well-known human rights lawyer and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, has spoken on the recent debate between the Senate President and Senator Aliru regarding the citizenship status of cows in Nigeria.

In a video he tweeted with the caption; “In @NGRSenate, there is an interesting debate as to whether or not cows are citizens of #Nigeria,” Odinkalu wrote.

He highlighted the unusual nature of the discussion taking place within the Nigerian Senate.

The debate, brought by Senator Aliru’s statement regarding the citizenship of cows, has gained attention both within and outside of Nigeria, raising questions about the interpretation of citizenship laws and the rights afforded to non-human entities.
