Nigeria’s security landscape continues to face serious challenges, and at the center of the nation’s military response is General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

A seasoned military officer with decades of service, Musa has been tasked with coordinating the Nigerian Armed Forces at a time when insurgency, banditry, and ethnic clashes continue to unsettle the country.

Appointed in 2023, Musa has pledged to strengthen joint operations among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, while also ensuring closer collaboration with other security agencies.

His leadership comes at a time when Nigeria’s unity is being tested by both terrorism in the northeast and communal violence across different regions.

Observers note that part of the difficulty lies in the sensitive nature of ethnic relations. For instance, some communities have long accused herders of prioritizing their livestock over human lives.

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, he stated, “The Fulani man favors his cow more than a human being. To him, when you kill his cow, it’s as if you’ve killed him, and in his own way of thinking, he believes taking revenge on humans is justified those are the issues we are talking about.”

This sentiment reflects the complex interplay between culture, livelihood, and the cycle of violence.

General Musa has repeatedly emphasized that peace can only be achieved through dialogue alongside military action. He argues that resolving insecurity requires addressing root causes such as poverty, illiteracy, and lack of opportunities for young people.
