Reinstated spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Darlington Nwauju, has stirred political discussion following his bold remarks during a live interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

In the interview, Nwauju stated, “If I were Fubara, upon my return to office on Thursday, I will announce my defection to APC, and we will gladly receive him into our party.”

His comments come just two days before the official end of the six-month emergency rule declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.

The emergency rule, declared on March 18, 2025, was in response to escalating political tensions, including a failed impeachment attempt against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and widespread attacks on critical oil infrastructure in the state.

The federal government’s intervention led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire State House of Assembly.

In their place, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs during the emergency period.

The National Assembly supported the move, citing national security and governance breakdowns.

However, the decision faced significant backlash from governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who argued the state of emergency was unconstitutional and challenged it at the Supreme Court.

With the emergency rule set to expire on September 18, 2025, preparations for Governor Fubara’s return to office have already begun.

A transition process is underway, marked by a thanksgiving service held in Port Harcourt on September 14.

However, the event was overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of key political figures, including Fubara himself and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, Fubara’s former political ally turned adversary.

Nwauju’s statement, suggesting a defection of Governor Fubara to the APC, has added a new dimension to the unfolding political drama.

While no official comment has been made by Governor Fubara or his team regarding such a move, the remarks reflect the heightened anticipation and strategic maneuvering that continue to shape Rivers State politics. Explore , More , News>>>
