Former lawmaker, Honourable Henry Shield, has lamented Nigeria’s current economic hardship, recalling a time less than a decade ago when basic commodities and living costs were far more affordable.
Speaking in a recent interview with Mic On Podcast from 1:00:38, Shield said he longs for the period when the price of rice, fuel, rent, and even smartphones were within the reach of ordinary Nigerians.
“I want to go back to the time when I used to buy a bag of rice for ₦8,500. I want to go back to when I would drive my car into a filling station and fill up my tank with ₦19,000 under Buhari. This one is not even under PDP. I want to go back to the time when I can send ₦50,000 home in a month and they are comfortable. I want to go back to the time when I can buy an iPhone for ₦150,000. These things are not dreams. They happened less than 10 years ago,” Shield said.
He added that housing in Abuja has also worsened drastically, with rents skyrocketing to levels previously unheard of. “I want to go back to the time when no rent in Abuja was ₦5 million. So if you say those people destroyed the country, please give me back those years,” he stressed.
