Chief Bisi Akande has made a surprising admission about his financial status, describing himself as a “very poor person” despite his decades of political leadership and influence in Nigerian politics.
During the Splash FM interview, the revelation came in the context of explaining how Tinubu financed his gubernatorial campaign entirely. “It was in obedience to his instruction that I contested for the governorship honestly, and he spent all the money that made me the governor. I didn’t spend any money—you didn’t spend one kobo”.
Akande revealed that even during his governorship campaign, he had no personal funds to finance his political ambitions. “I didn’t have any, and I told him I thought you were very rich. I’m a very poor person”. He stated when discussing how Tinubu funded his gubernatorial campaign.
The former APC chairman emphasized that his lack of wealth has remained consistent throughout his political career. When asked if he was no longer poor, Akande insisted: “I struggle. You’re no longer poor? I’m not rich. The same—I’m not rich”.
His admission challenges common perceptions about Nigerian politicians and wealth accumulation during public service. Akande’s claim of poverty despite holding high political offices, including governor and national party chairman, suggests either exceptional personal integrity or a different definition of wealth.
