There was a lighthearted moment in the Senate recently during a debate on a bill, when Senate President Godswill Akpabio made a joke about the outfit of Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

In a video shared by NASSTV from 0.56, Akpabio teased the former labour leader, saying his khaki outfit didn’t look like the traditional one associated with labour struggles. “This is a special linen material,” Akpabio said, smiling. “I don’t understand whether he’s still a comrade.”

In response, Oshiomhole, who is known for his past as a labour union leader and his signature khaki outfits, replied in a playful but firm tone. “With your permission, sir, and I take your pronouncement as a ruling,” he began.

He continued, “I shall come fully in my khaki and no senator may harass me on my choice of dressing.” Oshiomhole explained that there had been pressure from some colleagues for him to dress like other senators, and he had even heard there was a plan to walk him out of the chamber for not wearing a tie — just like what happened to Senator Wadada.

The Edo North senator jokingly referred to his cap, saying, “That’s why sometimes I wear this umbrella – sorry, not umbrella – this cap. Other times, I don’t. I’m not in search of identity.”
