Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has shared how he helped bring peace to Birni Gwari, a town once feared because of constant attacks by bandits.
In an interview with Arise Television, Governor Sani explained that when he became governor, he decided to visit Birni Gwari himself — a place many people were too scared to go. During his visit, he sat with traditional leaders, including the Emir of Birni Gwari.
According to the governor, the Emir surprised him by saying, “All the bandits you’re talking about were born in my presence.” Sani said he was shocked and asked, “Emir, so you know them? They’re killing our people.” But the Emir replied, “Sir, see what happened,” and explained how things got bad over time.
Governor Sani said he didn’t just offer peace without conditions. He told them that they must first release at least 200 people they had kidnapped before he would consider their requests. To his surprise, they did.
After that, the community asked him to reopen their major markets. Their grain market had been closed for 10 years, and their cattle market for seven. These markets were very important for their survival. The governor agreed — but only after he saw they were serious about peace.
