House of Representatives member Obi Aguocha has raised serious concerns about the physical condition of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as appearing like a “ghost-like figure” during a recent visit.

Aguocha, who represents Kanu’s constituency in the National Assembly, made the startling revelation during an interview on Arise News from 2:22, where he recounted his experience visiting the separatist leader at the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility.

“On the 21st of August, I had paid a visit to my constituent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the DSS detention,” the lawmaker stated. “And when I met with him, honestly, I thought I was seeing a ghost like figure.”

The representative’s stark description has intensified calls from various quarters for improved detention conditions and immediate access to proper medical care for Kanu. His comments have also reignited debate about the welfare of high-profile detainees in Nigerian custody.

Kanu has been held in DSS custody since his controversial extradition to Nigeria in June 2021. He faces charges of treason and terrorism, which he vehemently denies. His continued detention remains a highly contentious issue, with supporters demanding his unconditional release while critics insist on his prosecution.

The IPOB leader’s legal team has consistently raised concerns about his health and treatment while in detention. Aguocha’s recent public statement appears to corroborate these long-standing worries, though the DSS has yet to issue an official response.
