In a statement that has sparked widespread political discussion across Nigeria, Senator Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, has urged former governor Peter Obi to join forces with President Bola Tinubu and endorse his administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking through Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Umahi highlighted the unity among Southeast governors in their support for the current government.
He emphasized that all governors in the Southeast, regardless of party affiliation, are backing President Tinubu’s administration and called on undecided leaders like Peter Obi to come on board.
Onanuga shared on his social media platform that Senator Umahi confirmed the collective backing of the Southeast governors for President Tinubu’s government, urging Obi and others to join the movement.
Umahi pointed out the renewed federal attention and investment in the Southeast region under President Tinubu’s leadership.
He noted that the Igbo people are known for their enterprise and wisdom and that what they seek is fairness and equal treatment across Nigeria’s zones—something he believes Tinubu’s administration is delivering.
Reflecting on his time as governor of Ebonyi State, Umahi remarked on the transformation in federal presence and infrastructure development.
He recalled that during his tenure as governor and deputy governor, the lack of federal projects was a major concern, but under the current administration, multiple federal projects are now underway in Ebonyi.
He further highlighted the historic appointment of a Southeast Minister of Works and the progress on key infrastructure projects such as the Port Harcourt to Enugu road, Enugu to Abakaliki, Enugu to Onitsha, Onitsha to Owerri, and the Second Niger Bridge, noting that the federal government has already paid 30 percent of the bridge’s cost.
Umahi also announced plans to convene a summit of Southeast leaders to formally endorse President Tinubu for the 2027 elections, signaling a coordinated regional effort to support the president’s agenda.
In a direct appeal to Peter Obi, Umahi stressed the importance of leadership being about the people rather than personal ambitions.
He said, “Leadership is not about self—it’s about the people. If someone else is already doing what you would have done for your people, support him. I Call On My Brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, To Join Us And Work With Mr. President.”
On the national infrastructure front, Umahi provided updates on major projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which is nearing completion.
He revealed that over 80 percent of the first section, spanning 47.47 kilometers from Ahmadu Bello Way to the Lekki Deep Sea Port and Eleko Junction, has been completed, with steady progress on the second section.
Describing the highway as a six-lane, concrete-paved expressway, Umahi emphasized its importance for enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.
Senator Umahi’s call to Peter Obi reflects a strategic effort to unify political support in the Southeast and ensure continued development and stability in the region as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
