According to DAILY POST, a sad incident happened in the Ojoga community of Ichama, Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State. A 22-year-old man, Joseph Gabriel Obitiye, was killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The attack happened on Friday, March 28, 2025, at around 11:00 p.m. Earlier that day, Obitiye had taken his wife to St. Mary’s Hospital in Okpoga, where she sadly lost their baby during childbirth.

After he returned home, his friends gathered to comfort him, and they stayed together late into the night.

An eyewitness said that six armed herdsmen, carrying guns and machetes, went to a nearby shop to steal food and other goods. This had been a problem in the area for a long time.

Obitiye did not know they were armed. He walked up to them and asked why they were there so late. Suddenly, his friends heard him shout, “It’s Suleiman, Nana’s son!” Then, gunshots stopped.

Terrified, his friends ran for safety while the attackers kept shooting before escaping into the forest.

When the gunfire stopped, his friends came back and found Obitiye lying in a pool of blood.

He was barely able to speak, but he whispered the name “Suleiman, Nana’s son” before he died.

They rushed him to St. Mary’s Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.

The news of his death spread quickly, making people in the community very angry. The next morning, local youths and hunters went into the forest where the herdsmen lived, but they had already run away.
