Former Vice President and leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for using a church platform to advance political agendas. According to The Nation on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Atiku described Wike’s comments made during a Sunday service at St. James Anglican Church, Asokoro, as both inappropriate and disrespectful.

During the service, Wike reportedly used the pulpit to deliver a politically charged speech, prompting widespread backlash from Nigerians who believe religious venues should remain neutral and sacred. In his response, Atiku warned that there would be consequences for turning a place of worship into a political stage.

“The church is not a campaign ground. Using it to score political points dishonors both God and the congregation,” Atiku stated.

The former Vice President went further, accusing Wike of political hypocrisy. He recalled that during the 2023 general elections, Wike, alongside other political allies like Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, approached him privately to lobby for the Vice Presidential slot. Atiku questioned Wike’s integrity, describing his recent public outbursts as acts of desperation and misjudgment.

“Has Wike forgotten so soon how he came with Makinde and others to lobby for the VP ticket? He even reached out to my friends and political associates,” Atiku recounted.

Meanwhile, the ADC, which Atiku now represents, has experienced a surge in national interest following the expansion of its opposition coalition. Party officials revealed that the ADC’s official website crashed three times in two days due to a flood of visitors seeking information and membership opportunities.

However, the party has also raised alarm over alleged attempts by certain government actors to destabilize the coalition. According to the ADC, these efforts are meant to discourage citizens from aligning with the opposition. The party has called on law enforcement agencies to remain impartial and ensure a level playing field for all political movements.

With political tensions rising ahead of the 2027 elections, Atiku’s rebuke of Wike highlights the deepening rift within Nigeria’s political elite, as new alliances take shape and old loyalties are tested.
