The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has criticized former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for his recent comments against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the 2027 election.
According to The Nation, it was reported that Ganduje made it clear that any Northerner hoping to contest for the presidency should wait until 2031. He insisted that President Tinubu would complete his two terms in office.
The former Kano State governor dismissed any notion that the presidency would return to the North in two years, citing the existing North-South power rotation agreement. He described such expectations as unrealistic.
His remarks came on the same day that El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, posted on his verified X account, warning that the North could reject Tinubu in 2027; just as it did with President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. He claimed that Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party lost the 2015 election because they didn’t have the support they needed in the North.
He said, “Incidentally, many Nigerians have a short memory. Permit me to juggle the memories of some short memoried and uninitiated political neophytes. Many will recall that, as we approached the 2023 presidential election, with the conduct of some individuals, I desperately cautioned that we should be careful and not play with the North.”
Ganduje acknowledged that common sense had prevailed during the last election, leading to their victory during the presidential election; with undeniable and significant support from the Northern region, as reflected in the election results.
However, less than two years into Tinubu’s tenure, Ganduje noted that the relationship between the North and the administration was rapidly deteriorating. He attributed this to the actions and statements of several individuals from the President’s geopolitical zone and ethnic group.
