A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has challenged recent governors who abandoned the opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), demanding they justify their decisions with concrete evidence.

Chief Dan Ulasi accused the defecting governors of failing to demonstrate tangible benefits from joining the ruling party, arguing that Southeast governors who remained outside the APC continue to outperform their counterparts who switched allegiances.

Speaking during an interview with AIT, Chief Dan Ulasi questioned the strategic value of the defections. “You want to be close to the national, to get what? Tell me which of them that have moved got anything,” he said. “The APC states, what have they gotten? So, if you are moving, reference Ebonyi state and Imo state who are in APC and say this is happening in their states for being in APC. There’s more development in Enugu state, and there’s more development in Abia state.”

The PDP leader highlighted the achievements of governors who maintained their opposition status, contrasting their performance with APC-controlled states. “Go to Abia state, go to Enugu, and see what the governor is doing there. Go to Anambra and see what the governor of Anambra state is doing — wonderful works! They’re not in APC,” Ulasi stated.

He suggested that governors seeking to defect and who has defected should provide transparency about their motivations, particularly if corruption allegations drive their decisions. “If somebody doesn’t want to work and they want to move for one reason or the other, maybe they have shown you some papers of some fraud practices somewhere,” he explained. “The constituents in your place have a right to know why they gave you a vote and you are moving with our party certificate.”

He also raised constitutional concerns about the defection process, arguing that governors retain PDP credentials while serving in APC capacity. “Do you know what the implication of it is? You are still holding a PDP party certificate of winning an election from INEC. You haven’t returned it back to us. You haven’t resigned your office,” he said.

The party leader questioned why governors don’t resign their positions if they genuinely believe the PDP performs poorly. “If PDP was so bad, why don’t you resign your office and then go and contest? And we see this beautiful bride that has moved over to APC with our certificate. It’s unfortunate,” Ulasi concluded.
