British-American journalist, editor-in-chief, and CEO of the new media company Zeteo News, Mehdi Hasan, has reacted sharply to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments about protecting Christians in Nigeria, openly questioning the President’s grasp of Christianity.
In a post shared on his verified Twitter account, Hasan wrote: “The First Lady of Nigeria is a Christian pastor. Donald Trump can’t identify basic books of the Bible.”
Hasan’s reaction followed President Trump’s statement in which he declared that Christianity was facing an existential threat in Nigeria and vowed that the United States was “ready, willing, and able” to defend Christians around the world. Hasan’s tweet appeared to mock Trump’s credibility on religious issues, implying that the President’s own limited knowledge of the Bible undermines his moral authority to speak on behalf of global Christianity.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a Christian pastor and the wife of President Bola Tinubu. By referencing her, Hasan aimed to point out the irony in Trump’s comments, suggesting that Nigeria’s leadership already includes strong Christian representation and that the situation in the country is more complex than the U.S. President portrays.
The post quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions online. Some praised Hasan for calling out what they described as Trump’s performative religiosity and political exploitation of faith. however, criticized the journalist for trivializing the very real security and religious tensions in Nigeria, where violent attacks against Christian and Muslim communities persist.
