Senator Ireti Kingibe has called for an investigation into the sexual harassment allegation made by Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as reported by PUNCH.
She announced her decision on Friday, expressing her commitment to ensuring that the case is properly examined.
Her recent statement marks a shift from her earlier position, two weeks ago, she criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for reacting strongly to a seating reassignment in the Senate.
At the time, she argued that Senate rules should have been followed instead of turning the issue into a controversy.
Now, Kingibe has clarified that she never intended to dismiss the allegations.
She said she would lead efforts to address the case once it is formally presented in the Senate.
She also stated that sexual harassment remains a widespread issue in Nigeria, affecting people in homes and workplaces.
She urged all Nigerians to take the issue seriously and work towards ending it.
Kingibe called for a thorough, open, and fair investigation into the allegations.
She stressed that justice must be served, regardless of gender, status, or social class.
She also reaffirmed her commitment to advancing women’s rights, highlighting her support for the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and the creation of special seats for women in governance.
She aligned herself with global efforts to promote gender equity, stating that she remains dedicated to fairness and justice.
She also assured Nigerians that she remains focused on delivering good governance and dismissed any claims suggesting she does not take sexual harassment seriously.
