Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has shared that his government has spent ₦14.43 billion to fix up 61 public schools across the state. He gave this update during his monthly media chat called Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians, according to report by Vanguard on Sunday August 17 2025.
This announcement came after a former Commissioner for Information, Chief Eze Chikamnayo, raised concerns about how the money for school renovations was being used.
Chikamnayo questioned the ₦54 billion that was said to be set aside for the project, saying there were no clear results to show for it.
Governor Otti responded by explaining that the ₦54 billion was only a budget plan, not the actual money spent.
He said the real amount used so far is ₦14.43 billion, and the details are available in the government’s audited financial report. The report shows how much was spent as of December 31, 2024.
He also said that the government is working hard to improve education in the state and that the renovations are part of that effort. The schools being worked on are spread across different parts of Abia State.
Otti said,
“What is important is the actual cash that has been spent. As of December 31, 2024, the audited statement shows exactly how much of the N54 billion was utilized. We’ve spent N14.43 billion so far on 61 schools.”
