The rising alliance of opposition figures hoping to dethrone President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election has drawn a blunt response from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In a firm dismissal, the party declared that no political coalition, no matter how broad, stands a real chance of unseating the president at the polls.
According to a report by The PUNCH, on Tuesday, July 2, key opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, gathered in Abuja to strengthen an emerging coalition. Their objective: to create a viable alternative to the current administration by rallying disgruntled party members and politically active Nigerians under one umbrella. The group is reportedly adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for the 2027 contest.
While the coalition projects itself as a force driven by national interest and democratic revival, the APC views the effort as nothing more than political theatre. Bala Ibrahim, spokesperson for the APC, described the initiative in no uncertain terms: “The coalition is dead on arrival because it’s composed of people who were defeated politically, defeated ideologically, and they will be defeated again collectively in 2027 by our party’s candidate.”
Many within the APC argue that the freedom the opposition enjoys in assembling openly without fear is itself a reflection of progress made under Tinubu’s government. Ibrahim noted that the coalition’s ability to meet freely in public venues “means the APC government has improved the security situation of the country.” He added, “It has improved so well that they don’t have any fear of insecurity, nor do they have any fear of power failure.
