Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has stated that if he and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, had won the 2023 election, they would have been the first president and vice president of Nigeria born after Nigeria gained independence 63 years ago. According to Obi, all previous leaders were born before the country became independent

Peter Obi made this statement in a live coverage by Symfoni TV from 0:12. He also said that this is the first time a major political party in Nigeria (LP) has a national chairman born after independence, which he sees as a positive step forward. He added that it is time to bring in new leaders and retire those who have been in power for a long time.

In Obi’s words: “I keep telling you people that Datti and I would have been the first people born after Nigeria’s independence 63 years ago to become president and vice president. Everyone who has been ruling us was born before independence. This is also the first time there is a national chairman of a big party who is born after independence. So you see, it is time to retire these people.”
