Civil society groups are calling on the police to investigate the reported arrest and detention of a young social media commentator, Hamdiyyah Sheriff. She was allegedly taken after speaking out against the government of Sokoto State.

During an interview that was shared by Trust TV, Auwal Rafsanjani, a director of one of the civil society organizations, shared troubling details about the incident. He explained that Hamdiyyah was reportedly kidnapped in a Keke Napep (a tricycle taxi) in Sokoto State. She was then taken across state lines to Zamfara, where unknown people injected her with a substance and abandoned her.

“Some good citizens saw her and took her to the hospital. But while she was there, we learned that the Zamfara State Police Commissioner placed her under arrest,” Auwal said.

What’s even more worrying, according to Auwal, is that the police in Sokoto are now pressuring the Zamfara Police Commissioner to send Hamdiyyah back to Sokoto.

“And the commissioner of police is now under pressure from the commissioner of police in Sokoto to release this girl to Sokoto. We believe that if they take her back to Sokoto, they are likely going to kill her,” Auwal warned. “That’s why we are calling on the Inspector General of Police to step in immediately and make sure she is safe.”

The civil society groups say justice must be done and that no one should be harmed for expressing their views online. They are asking the police and government to protect Hamdiyyah.
