United States President Donald Trump reportedly declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” in response to allegations of a Christian genocide in the country.
According to The Punch, he was said to have made the announcement in a post on Truth Social on Friday, which was later shared on the White House’s X handle.
According to a 2022 publication by the Family Research Council, the designation of a nation as a “country of particular concern” is an official classification usually made by the US government, specifically the Secretary of State, under certain US laws.
The report explained that while the exact implications depend on the legislation invoked, the designation generally signifies that the affected country engages in actions considered harmful to US interests or contrary to universal human rights standards.
However, while he was reacting to the development on his verified X handle, Pat Utomi, said that those who brought Nigeria into the development are now troubled by the declaration.
He said, “So those who brought Nigeria to a place of particular concern are troubled. Human solidarity demands of the world the role President Trump is providing leadership for. Appearing before the editorial Board of the CSM in Boston Jan 1997 lobbying for an ICC I called for this.” View, More,
