General Yakubu Gowon, a former Nigerian Head of State, has shared an insight from a book about former President Muhammadu Buhari that highlights Buhari’s approach to managing public funds during his time in office

In a video shared by Symfoni TV from 10:11, Gowon said that shortly after Buhari became president and took office, he was told about the need to increase the money meant for food and catering services in the Presidential Villa. He said Buhari first asked how much was already being spent.

Gowon said that when Buhari was told the monthly budget was N10 million, which covered food for the president, vice president, guest houses, and official banquets for visiting leaders, he exclaimed in surprise. He said Buhari stated that the amount was too high and insisted it should be cut down immediately.

In Gowon’a words: “Shortly after being sworn-in as president and commander-in-chief, General Buhari was informed of the need to increase the budget for catering services in the Villa. He then asked what the existing budget was. When they told him it was 10 million naira for the State House including the vice president, guest houses and banquets in honor of visiting leaders, he screamed wow and said even that amount is too much and it should be drastically reduced”
