Activist Mahdi Shehu has raised alarm over what he described as a shocking “victory parade” by armed bandits in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, warning that criminal gangs now operate freely and have effectively taken control of parts of the North.

According to a report by Daily Post, Shehu said the heavily armed men, dressed in full combat uniforms, gathered in Bakori for what was called a “peace deal” with a defeated local community.

Instead of peace, the gathering turned into a chilling display of power — a parade symbolizing total control over the area.

Shehu’s post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account painted a grim picture of life under bandit rule.

For more than a decade, he said, criminal groups have terrorized villages — killing, maiming, raping, and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Many communities, he added, have been forced to accept the bandits’ authority just to survive.

“The bandits have effectively carved out their own state within a state, where their rules override those of the government,” Shehu wrote.

He lamented that in many rural areas, the government’s presence has become almost non-existent.

Residents reportedly pay levies to the bandits to access their farmlands, trade in local markets, or even move freely between villages.

The activist warned that the situation in Bakori is not isolated, saying similar conditions exist across several parts of Northern Nigeria where the state’s authority has completely eroded.

Shehu’s revelation has sparked widespread outrage online, with Nigerians expressing deep concern over what many see as the normalization of lawlessness.

Social media users called for urgent government action to reclaim affected communities and restore public confidence.

His statement adds to growing fears that criminal groups are no longer just terrorizing citizens but are now governing them — a grim sign of how far insecurity has spread across the region. See, More, Here>>>
