Nnamdi Iroegbu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and a spokesperson for the Indigenous People of Nigeria has slammed Southeast leaders for consistently dragging Labour Party’s Peter Obi into public discussions, particularly criticizing the Minister of Works David Umahi.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV from 14:10, Iroegbu condemned what he described as repeated, “careless statements” by Southeast politicians, singling out Umahi for what he sees as an obsession with attacking Obi, whom many Nigerians see as a symbol of hope and change.

“Anytime Southeast leaders, particularly David Umahi, are making statements, they couldn’t end it without mentioning the man Nigerians want to lead them, which is Peter Obi,” Iroegbu said. “He couldn’t finish whatever garbage he is giving out there without mentioning his name.”

Iroegbu’s comments reflect a rising frustration among Obi supporters and others who believe that some politicians from the Southeast are deliberately attempting to discredit the former Anambra governor, despite his growing popularity nationwide.

He accused Umahi and others of using Obi’s name to stay politically relevant, rather than focusing on real issues affecting the region and the country. According to Iroegbu, this persistent focus on Obi shows the anxiety within the political establishment over the growing influence of the former presidential candidate.

“This is not leadership,” Iroegbu added, emphasizing the need for more constructive and issue-based engagements from Southeast leaders.

As political tensions continue to simmer, especially with eyes already on the 2027 general elections, Iroegbu’s remarks are likely to fuel further debate over the conduct of elected officials and the role of Peter Obi in shaping Nigeria’s political future.
