Executive Director of the Centre for Transparency and Advocacy, Faith Nwadishi, has disclosed that she witnessed various forms of vote-buying during the Anambra State Governorship election held on Saturday.
Speaking in an interview aired on Arise News Television from 2:42 , she explained that at one polling unit where she and her team went to observe, they surprisingly saw some young voters standing aside, refusing to cast their votes.
Nwadishi stated that these young citizens told her they had been offered ₦3,000 to vote for a particular candidate, but they felt the amount was too small to sell their votes for. According to her, they were holding out, waiting for the vote-buyers to increase their offer.
She said: “There was a particular polling unit that we went to yesterday and the young people were standing by and they refused to vote. When we interrogated them to find out why they refused to vote, they said they were offered them N3,000 and they thought N3,000 was too small for their votes. They were negotiating and waiting for the officials to upgrade it.”
She added that even food vouchers and money transfer options were being offered to some voters as incentives during the just-concluded Anambra State election.
Her words: “You also see where notes are being given to people right now. They aren’t taking too much money to the polling units. They give people notes to say money can be transferred to you or you can go to a particular store to get groceries. So food vouchers have been included in all of that.” View, More,
